Protecting Rural Land & Preserving Community Heritage
Our History
OUR-SOIL began as a group of concerned residents in North Okaloosa County who witnessed firsthand the impact of incompatible development in the Baker area. What started as neighbors coming together has grown into a unified nonprofit organization dedicated to defending the rural character, farmland, natural resources, and heritage that make Okaloosa unique.
We formed Okaloosa United Residents for Saving Our Irreplaceable Land, Inc. (OUR-SOIL) to ensure that development follows the law, respects the community, and protects the land future generations will depend on.
What Drives Us
Our Mission
OUR-SOIL is committed to protecting the rural character, working farmlands, natural resources, and historical heritage of Okaloosa County. We oppose incompatible development that threatens farming, strains infrastructure, or disregards county and state law. Through civic engagement, public education, and legal action, we advocate for responsible, sustainable growth that prioritizes residents and preserves our community’s long-term wellbeing.

Protecting What Cannot Be Replaced
Why It Matters
Protect Farmland and Open Spaces
Farmland and green space are irreplaceable. Preserving them ensures a sustainable future for agriculture, wildlife, and the character of our community.
Prevent Overdevelopment
Unchecked or incompatible development strains roads, schools, emergency services, and natural resources—placing long-term burdens on residents.
Support Responsible, Lawful Growth
We advocate for growth that follows the Comprehensive Plan, adheres to state law, and respects the capacity of local infrastructure and rural land.
Ensure Residents’ Voices Are Respected
Residents deserve equal consideration in development decisions. Our goal is to make sure local voices are heard, valued, and included.
Preserve Community Heritage
Rural identity is part of Okaloosa’s history and future. Protecting it preserves the culture, traditions, and quality of life that define our region.
